Wage Inequality, Minimum Wage Effects and Spillovers
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates possible spillover effects of the UK minimum wage. The halt in the growth in inequality in the lower half of the wage distribution (as measured by the 50:10 percentile ratio) since the mid 1990s, in contrast to the continued inequality growth in the upper half of the distribution, suggests the possibility of a minimum wage effect and spillover effects on wages above the minimum. This paper analyses individual wage changes, using both a difference-in-differences estimator and a specification involving cross-uprating comparisons, and concludes that there have not been minimum wage spillovers. Since the UK minimum wage has always been below the 10 percentile, this lack of spillovers implies that minimum wage changes have not had an effect on the 50:10 percentile ratio measure of inequality in the lower half of the wage distribution. The Contribution of the Minimum Wage to U.S. Wage Inequality over Three Decades: A Reassessment
We reassess the effect of minimum wages on US earnings inequality using additional decades of data and an IV strategy that addresses potential biases in prior work. We find that the minimum wage reduces inequality in the lower tail of the wage distribution, though by substantially less than previous estimates, suggesting that rising lower tail inequality after 1980 primarily reflects underlying...

This paper develops a two-country new trade theory framework with two types of labor (skilled and unskilled) and an imperfect labor market arising from country-specific real minimum wages. It examines welfare implications of trade liberalization and spillover effects of labor market shocks in a global economy. The model identifies two key forces that shape the results: i) external scale effects...
متن کاملDistributional Effects of Local Minimum Wage Hikes: A Spatial Job Search Approach∗ Click here for the latest version
This paper develops and estimates a spatial general equilibrium job search model to study the effects of local and federal minimum wage policies. In the model, firms post vacancies in multiple locations. Workers, who are heterogeneous in terms of location and educational types, engage in random search and can migrate or commute in response to job offers. I estimate the model by combining multip...
متن کاملWould a Legal Minimum Wage Reduce Poverty? A Microsimulation Study for Germany
In view of rising wage inequality and increasing poverty, the introduction of a legal minimum wage has recently become an important policy issue in Germany. We analyze the distributional effects of the introduction of a nationwide legal minimum wage of € 7.5 per hour on the basis of a microsimulation model which accounts for the complex interactions between individual wages, the tax-benefit sys...
متن کاملThe Effects of Minimum Wages on Employment
The minimum wage has gained momentum among policymakers as a way to alleviate rising wage and income inequality. Much of the debate over this policy centers on whether raising the minimum wage causes job loss, as well as the potential magnitude of those losses. Recent research shows conflicting evidence on both sides of the issue. In general, the evidence suggests that it is appropriate to weig...
